I was able to watch this movie when it first came out. I knew going into it that it was way overhyped mainly because it caused people who knew didly squat about horror to think that they were horror buffs. My expectations were extremely high mainly because it was meant to be one of the goriest, sickest, most disgusting movie to come out in years. Was I disapointed...yes. Was it a bad movie...not exactly.

The first half is one of the strangest parts of a movie that I've ever witnessed. I'm a bit torn about it because it's really, really good but also really, really unnecessary. It starts off with the main characters partying in Europe. Countless naked women ensue and forty minutes later you're stuck thinking "Is this a horror movie or some crappy teen comedy?" At the same time though this is some of the best character development done in years. I was able to identify with them because they talked like I do and act like me and my friends do. They were also fun and exciting.

Onto the second half, now this is the really good part. It's sick and twisted but is it vile and gut wrenching....absolutely not. I cringed once because of the sound of acheles tendon being cut. Ouch! There is some great gore but it felt like some crazy person at the studios wanted to be different and stand out but still followed the guidlines. That's not being different! Roth cut away WAY to much. You barely got to see anything. What disappoints me is that its supposed to make ME sick being a horror buff but some of my friends love comedies and saw this and laughed because you saw nothing.

One performance stood out above the others and that was Derek Richardson. He did absolutely amazing. He did a great job in everything that he was given. I couldn't believe that this stupid little guy from Dumb and Dumberer would be up there for favorite performances of all time. His performance as he gets tortured is absolutely amazing. That is probably the scariest part of the entire movie. He displays his fear so honestly and realistically that I still can't believe. If he doesn't get some recognition for his role then something is wrong with this world....well, we live in a world where two "music" tv stations show nothing but reality tv so who knows what would happen.

Eli Roth. This is a man who knows his stuff and I'm glad he does. He's a horror fan so I'm quite glad that he wasn't afraid to show it with cameos but the great Takashi Miike. I actually watched the little featurette on the DVD and now I must say, Roth is a complete dick. I don't think I've been more annoyed with someone before in my life. He is such a moron that its hard to even stand. I hope I am quite wrong about him and that I was just in a bad mood when I watched that segment.

Overall, this was a very cool and enjoyable movie. However, on repeated viewing experiences it does lose much of it's flare. The awkward dialogue seems to show through much more and the pace seems off as you wait for it to happen. Still fun though.
