Freddy vs. Jason

Freddy vs. Jason

For a lot of fanboys this is their most anticipated movie of all time. Why? Because it's the legendary meeting of two horror icons in a glorious bloody battle where only one comes out alive. As much as I would love to say that this is the ultimate epic showdown, I just can't. Yes, it's entertaining but it's still not nearly as good as it should have been.

The one problem that FvJ has is that the film contradicts itself with the other franchises. There are many things that are made up just for the sake of the film even though it makes no sense with the rest of the franchises. One of the main examples is that Jason is suddenly afraid of water. I understand that the reason for such a plot device is mainly to show contrasts between the two villains. It just doesn't make sense and isn't even established in the Friday the 13th franchise so it kinda comes out of left field.

Another major drawback for this film is the acting. Boy the acting sure is bad here. First off, we have Monica Keena who really can't act believably to save her own life. It's really quite pathetic to watch knowing that she's a paid actress. We also get the awkward line delivery from Kelly Rowland who tries her best but acting just isn't her thing. Jason Ritter is another one who really doesn't appear to have great acting ability. I think it has more to do with the horrible dialogue than the actors themselves (no excuse for Keena though, she's just awful). Other than the villains, which I'll talk about later, the one actor that stands out above the rest is Katherine Isabelle. She's definitely becoming a scream queen with her spot on acting and amazing body. I mean, did you SEE that shower scene?

Onto the stars of the show: Freddy and Jason. Robert Englund is of course back to prove us with a tremendous portrayal of his iconic character Freddy Krueger. This one man that is consistently great when he steps into Fred’s shoes. Everything is spot on and you can tell that he just loves playing the character. He is definitely a joy to watch on screen. We also have the new man on the job: Ken Kirzinger. Now, with such an iconic role, he probably had some butterflies. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t do a great job like he was probably hoping that he would. He gave him way too much of a sympathetic side. It just doesn’t work for the character and I know for me, a fan of the Friday the 13th series, he seemed like a wuss. Kinda disappointing.

One thing that really bothered me about this film was the really poor writing. I mean, the writers had SO much to work with yet they just didn’t live up. The final showdown is pretty much the sole reason to even watch this film. Everything else is pretty much lead up to that and that’s not how it should have been. It should have been a high-octane thrill ride throughout. Instead of acting like we need the characters introduced to us, how bout just give em to us and let them do their thing. I mean honestly, who, going into this film, is not going to know who Fred or Jay are? That’s just poor writing.

Another thing that I wish that they hadn’t done was make it so comedic. It would have played out much better had it taken itself seriously and been genuinely scary. I mean, I know I would have enjoyed it a TON more had it been scary. Also, the violence shouldn’t have been so silly. I mean, the whole “head twisting” bit could’ve been cool if it hadn’t been so comedic but of course, they took the weak route. Shame, shame.

Now, the one thing that really baffles me every time is how the entire movie, up until about the 80 minute mark, can be so out there and not really well focused and then suddenly it gets great. I mean, this final showdown is absolutely fantastic! The pure brutality in the violence just makes me salivate at the mouth. Its just so well done!

Though I did enjoy this film when I first viewed it, it has gone down with each and every viewing with its true flaws truly shining through. If you have no prior knowledge of the series and are just looking for a good time then I highly recommend this. It’s entertaining, with some nice gore, funny moments, and great nudie shots. If you’re a fan of either series then chances are you’ve already seen this and share similar opinions as I do. Let’s just hope that if they make a sequel, they make it scary.

6/10
