This movie is either a love it or a hate it kind of thing. Luckily for me, I love it as well as the many sequels. One thing
that always intrigued me about this film was the cover. I loved the image of the severed limbs with a saw blade next to them.
It was always just so surreal and I felt like I needed to take a shower by just looking at it. It was grotesque, grimy and
I loved it to death.
Now as far as the movie goes, it lived up to all my expectations and more. It had a great story, interesting characters,
great gore and did I mention an intriguing plot? I loved it all. When I first heard about this I was a little weary because
it was either getting slammed by critics or getting rave reviews. There was no “on the fence” about it. Either
it was a modern masterpiece or it sucked. So with extremely mixed expectations I watched this film and was absolutely blown
away!
The story is a great little tale of a man wanting to give others a new chance at life by making them conquer death. Sorta
like an extreme Christian group, right? Yeah well I’m pretty sure there’s no religious folk that are as crazy
as our main villain Jigsaw (but some are damn close). This man is maniacal, sick, and twisted beyond belief. And his logic
is so simple that you can’t help but be intrigued by his theory that “those who do not live life do not deserve
life.” Gotta love it.
The story basically centers around our two heros Adam and Dr. Gordon. Each of which is not living the oh so perfect life.
One is a low life photographer and the other is a washed up doctor who is cheating on his wife. Jigsaw decides to teach them
a life lesson and boy does the shit hit the fan. But more on that later.
The traps in this film are absolutely out of this world. I mean honestly, who thinks of this shit? I know I don’t.
Well…after seeing these films I do but still, I mean BEFORE the whole Saw craze. We have the “Reverse Bear Trap”
on display where it will tear open the persons jaw if it doesn’t come off. Let me tell you , that is one suspenseful
as hell scene. I’m pretty sure I shat a brick at one point. There’s also trap of razor wire, flame, and an ultimate
one.
Onto the acting. Well…let’s just say that the acting department isn’t exactly the strong suit. I mean
Carey Elwes gives a pretty damn bad performance. He really wasn’t believable but I can’t really tell if it’s
because of him or the script. Leigh Whannel on the other hand did a really good job for his first time acting. Some people
complain and gripe about him not being good but I think he did a fine job. Also we get Danny Glover in the film for about
five minutes and he seems to be there just for the paycheck. But I mean, he’s Danny Glover so I guess he’s allowed.
As for the ending. Wow. That’s all I’ll say for the two of you out there that haven’t seen this movie,
I won’t be the one to spoil it for you. Needless to say, it’s the greatest twist in a horror movie since Scream.
One for the ages, that’s for damn sure.
In the end, ‘Saw’ is a great film with an intriguing storyline (which just doesn’t seem to end with all
of these sequels), great little traps, and genuine suspense. This is art amongst the crappy J Horror film and PG-13 remakes
that are spewed out of Hollywood nowadays. Nice to see Lionsgate take a stand and give us what we want. A gory suspense
filled nightmare.
