A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors

directed by CHUCK RUSSELL

What I Thought:
One of the better Nightmare sequels that has everything the first one had and the second lacked. Not only did this sizzle sequel bring freshness, wit and intelligence back to the series, it became one of the funnest, coolest and most memorable movie in the series.
The story inteligently refuses to follow part 2's storyline and idea, discarding it almost completely (except that well . . . it counted it's events as real). Standing in it's own two feet, it creates a new universe that lasted until part 5 and ended for good. The story is very engrossing and very, very fun to watch, without boring me for one second. It features some of the most creative (ephatize that, this entry has the most creative death scenes ever . . . they can possibly put part 1 to shame) and memorable moments and lines in the entire series. The script could have been a decent way to close the series (I imagine this was 'supposed' to be a final chapter) and made my day by bringing back Nancy Thompson (the beautiful Heather Langenkamp) back to face Freddy.

One of the very small kicks I have to give this sequel is that this is the movie that started Freddy's clowning spree, he isn't the complete clown he became from parts 4 ahead but he lowers his scary side to put up his 'playful' side. Another thing I didn't like much is that well . . . the effects are very badly handled, some of the death scenes have some great great makeup effects (veins) but they are mostly weak (the skelleton comes to mind). I didn't care much for that, since the plot has enough goodies to keep me up and smiling.

The characters (as opposed to Part 2) are very very likable and very well written, this is one of the best cast of characters ever and not only that, the movie is so well cast it's almost painful. All the actors do a great job and they have a lot of chemistry (the 'group' scenes kicked more ass than anything) between them. I loved every character and felt for every one of them, this is very rare in a 'teen' flick. The script manages to connect each character to their dream abilities (key plot element, amazingly done by the way) and that made the dream sequences a riot to watch.

I loved how this one was directed. The lighting played a big ass part here and made the movie look great visually (just see the image). There were lots of reds and greens, that combines with the crazy camera shots (I loved the overhead shot of the 'bed hell' . . . you'll see). Overall, I think they managed to liven up a LOT this series with a great middle chapter that is one of the best (and prequel to my personal favorite, "A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master").

Gore:
Enough. Cuts, smashed head, veins pulled out, severed head and some more.

Overall Rating:
"8.5/10", One of the better Nightmare movies with an inteligent plot, great characters and creativeness all around.
