What I Thought:
In my opinion, the second worst "Nightmare On Elm Street" film (6 gets the trophy) but that's not much saying because this
movie isn't really that bad, a second viewing made me appreciate it further. This also has the words 'sequel' carved in it's
forehead with blood. The main problem in this movie is it's obvious ill-fated attempt to 'break the rules' (I think that was
supposed to happen until part three . . . thank god it didn't).
The intial concept is good, very good actually but there's somthing in the execution that made it go bad. The truth is that
the good intial concept is pushed way too far and becomes old THIS fast. What wanted to be changed is the way Freddy approaches
his victims. This time around, he comes in to the real world to slice up the kids. How you may ask? By possessing the new
resident of the infamous house in Elm Street. Does this sound cool? Believe me, it is . . . in the beggining. This idea wears
out really really quickly and that brings me to:
Another problem with the narrative in the sequel: The first hour of the movie only builds up tension with very little and
brief appearances by the main man, Freddy. The first kill takes like more than half an hour to happen and not only that, it's
boring. In fact, the entire narrative of the movie is boring until the real action kicks ten minutes before the movie is over.
The incidents happening during the build up aren't really scary nor exciting at the least. One murder, a lot of talkie talkie
and sudden apparitions by Freddy. It doesn't help the slow pacing to have such an uninteresting and annoying main character.
The characters aren't the best in the series, not by a mile. The truth is that the only remotely interesting characters are
Lisa and Grady. Both have cool personalities (and the latter carries a mullet if I remember correctly) and the actors behind
them are good. Jesse on the other hand is the worst lead in the series, he is boring and annoying. I am truly sorry for Mark
Patton who did a very good job with the bad part he had. He hit all the levels of his character like a champ. The rest of
the characters are too underwritten.
This movie, I want to mention, oozes atmostphere and Freddy is still really scary, this is his last movie before he started
clowning out. The little scenes he shows up kicked ass. The direction is ok but mostly generic with nothing besides the atmosphere
and decent lightning and camera tricks standing out.
Gore:
Not that much. The highlight would be Freddy coming out of Jesse. Besides that, some random slashings, a brain exposing and
blood. The makeup and gore effects rock.
Overall Rating:
"6/10", one of the worst movies in the series but still an engrossing and slightly boring watch with a nice initial concept.
