Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

directed by SCOTT GLOSSERMAN

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket I first saw the trailer for this a year before it's dvd release. I fell in love with it just for the trailer which seemed to be right up my alley. So, after a years anticipation, I was finally able to watch it. Needless to say I fell in love with it right off the bat and didn't look back. It's incredible in every way shape and form. The acting is superb, the story original and the humor right up my alley. I really couldn't have asked more from this incredible film.

As I stated, the acting in this film couldn't have gotten any better. Nathan Baesel proves that he is one o fthe best actors working today even with his small filmography. He'll be going places. Angela Goethels also does a great job though I did wish we could have gotten a little more attractive person for the role. Mainly because we have to care for her and I'm much quicker to root for an attractive likable girl then an ugly likable one. But I suppose that just the male talking in me.

With its tight script and refreshing story, the last thing it needs is an excessive amount of blood which would have only distracted from the film itself. Something I really loved was during Leslie's first kill, you don't see him kill the couple but you hear everything. It's probably one of the coolest sound effects I've ever heard. It's grotesque and brutal, just the way I like it.

The story, as some of you might know, concerns a documentary crew following Leslie Vernon, as he goes on a killing rampage. He aspires to be like his mentors: Freddy, Michael and Jason. Now how cool is that? That's probably the best premise any horror fan can ask for. I mean, it's a killer dissecting the genre in which he lives and breathes. I loved Leslie talking about how cardio is such an important part of the job. And talking about how he has to keep up with kids who are running while all he can do is appear to run. I couldn't help but love every second of that. It was absolutely fantastic.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket One thing that seemed to bother many different people is the third act. It goes from being a documentary into a straight up slasher flick. Some people think that it's a bad idea and that it loses steam for becoming what it parodies throughout the movie but I beg to differ. I think that's the only way that it could have been done. I mean, yes, maybe some of the actions of the teenagers could have been dumbed down. Other than that small complaint, I see nothing else wrong with the ending. That's what the entire film has led up to and if you've watched it enough times like I have, you notice that there's no other way that it could have ended. It was set up so perfectly throughout the film.

There's definitely some humor in this that non horror fans may not get mainly because this is obviously made FOR fans of the genre. There are funny little tidbits throughout such as references to other horror films (Chucky, Fred, Jay, Mike). I love how they treat the killers so casually like they are genius' in their field. Another thing which I loved was that Leslie's mentor is shown as being an old timer who was around in the 60's and 70's. With other hints it is easy to decifer that he is in fact Billy from Black Christmas. Little things like that make this film all the better.

So, in conclusion, I love this film to death. I say that a lot but this is definitely true. I watch it at least once a month and there's not many films I would do that for. The great acting, tremendous humor, and all around great story excels this film above the rest. You won't be disappointed after watching the exploits of Mr. Leslie Vernon, the slasher from Glen Echo... 9/10 Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
