Seed of Chucky

As a fan of the Chucky franchise since the early years, I knew going into this one that it would just be a fun, gory, hilarious experience. And that's exactly what I got. This is one great little horror flick that entertained me from start to finish. Chucky's one liners were fucking great. I couldn't help but laugh every time he even said one. "Well, well, well looks like miss high and mighty isn't so perfect after all". Can't help but love it.

The story here is pretty basic in the Chucky sense: the three members of the family (Chucky, Tiffany, Glen/Glenda) want to come into human form. Things go awry when Tiffany wants to give up the lifestyle but Chucky doesn't. Trouble ensues and the shit hits the fan by the end. Always entertaining. While I do prefer the dark, pre-family era of the Chucky franchise, I do still enjoy the funny, family Chucky. It's a bit more on the laughs and a little less on the serious tone so I guess it all comes out pretty much even.

The acting here pretty much fares from really bad to average. The only person that really seemed to impress me here was Brad Dourif but that didn't at all surprise me since he's always great. I was surprised that the "oscar nominated" Jennifer Tilly didn't bring her A game since her role really wasn't stretching her talents. I mean hell, she was playing herself yet she really wasn't that great. Kinda disappointed but that's pretty much paycheck acting at its finest here folks.

The kills in this don't go too crazy with some stabbings and such. One that I really enjoyed however was the decapitation. I loved the shot of the head flying up towards the camera and then dropping back down. Very stylish and fun. The acid death was very under whelming in the execution because it just didn't add anything. A quick CGI shot of the skin dissolving in a cheesy way and then cuts to a completely different looking burnt flesh look. Just didn't look very good. The fire death was also pretty stupid because it was completely fake. I mean I understand that this is a horror movie but be reasonable. We're not stupid.

The direction in this was very point and shoot. It did have some interesting shots every once in a while but mostly it wasn't anything to write home about. Could have been handled much better by the man who created Chucky in the first place, Don Mancini. I suppose he should just stick to writing which he is definitely fluent in. I loved all the references to past horror movies.

Was definitely a "Wait, did that just happen" moment. The subsequent bit involving Glen/Glenda getting revenge on Chucky pissed me off because there's no way in hell that he could kill someone like Chucky. And that ninja bullshit just pissed me off. The only bit of it I did like was the dismemberment bit with the axe. I enjoyed that part mainly because it showed some humanity in Chucky and it's always very cool when he shows emotions.

In the end, this film is fun with plenty of good laughs and a decent amount of gore gags. Possibly the weakest of the series (haven't seen 3 in a while so that opinion may change). A definite highlight was Tilly's cleavage throughout the entire thing (In human form, not doll for you sicko). Still, you won't be missing much other than a fun little flick. However if you're a Chucky fan, this is a must see!
